Kanto Great Earthquake Monuments in Samukawa

The Great Kanto Earthquake was a big earthquake that occurred in the Kanto area in 1923.
It is estimated that more than 105,000 people died or became missing.
Many people died also in Samukawa.
Many houses have collapsed. About 60% of the houses were completely destroyed.
Local cracks also occurred.
Several monuments are built in Samukawa to keep this memory of the Kanto Great Earthquake.

Kifune shrine

This is a collapsed “Torii gate (a gateway at the entrance to a shrine)”.

Ichinomiya hachiman shrine

The names of the dead are engraved on the back of this monument.

Samukawa-jinjya shrine

This is a collapsed first “Torii gate”.

Northern Community Center

A monument honoring the carpenter who worked hard to recover from the earthquake.

Kurami-jinjya shrine

The damage situation in the Kurami district is engraved.
